A lot of people feel that having a winning smile says a lot about them. Unfortunately, there are times when the natural processes of aging, an old filling or chips on one of the teeth in your smile can leave you feeling self-conscious. In a case like this, it’s a good idea to consult with Davidson Cosmetic & Family Dentistry’s team of dental professionals to explore your cosmetic restoration options.

One of the best methods for cosmetically restoring a visually unappealing tooth it to fit it for a porcelain or porcelain fused to metal crown. For all intents and purposes, a crown is a copy of the enamel layer of your tooth. The porcelain material can be shaded to match the natural enamel of the surrounding teeth.

The process for installing a crown starts with our Davidson Cosmetic & Family Dentistry dentist examining the tooth and taking some X-rays. This helps to determine if the overall health of the tooth and gain a clear understanding of the depth of the tooth enamel.

Dr. Michael B. Wilhite will then form an abutment by removing the entire enamel layer. The little post-like structure made from the core of your tooth will eventually serve to anchor the crown in place.

A detailed impression will then be taken of the abutment and corresponding teeth. The abutment is covered by a hard plastic temporary crown, and the impression is sent off to a dental lab where your crown is produced.

Once it is ready, we will call you back in to remove the temporary crown and cement your new crown in place on the abutment. With proper care, your new porcelain crown will restore the appearance of your tooth for many years to come.
