Have you recently injured your soft tissues? If so, our Davidson Cosmetic & Family Dentistry team recommends improving the situation as much as possible by staying calm and doing the following things:

-Rinse: Rinse your mouth with warm salt-water solution. This will help clean the injured area and reduce the risk of infection. To make the saltwater, simply mix a half of a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water. Swish for about one minute.

-Apply pressure: Apply pressure to the bleeding site for 15 to 20 minutes. Hold a piece of gauze pad or a tea bag to the area during this time and try to control the bleeding as much as possible.

-Reduce swelling: You can reduce the swelling, control the bleeding, and relieve pain by holding a cold compress to the outside of the cheek that lies over the affected area. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes. If it doesn’t help, feel free to take a little break and then ice the area again.

-See your dentist: It’s important that you see your dentist right away if the bleeding doesn’t stop. If your dentist is not available, please visit the hospital emergency room. Until you are treated, continue to apply pressure to the injured area.
