Dental crowns can be about as sturdy as your natural teeth. Still, crowns can fall off and get lost. If you lose a crown or it just falls out, the dentist can fix things for you. Before you reach the dentist or while you wait for an appointment, you can do a few things to help yourself.

An issue that might be on your mind is discomfort your tooth is feeling. A way you can soothe discomfort and feel more at peace is to apply some dabs of clove oil with a cotton swab. Of course, reaching our office will be the best way to help yourself, so if you can forego the clove oil if we can fit you in quickly enough.

If you happen to find your wayward crown, you can place it back on the tooth, though be sure to rinse it off first. It will have trouble staying on by itself, but using some dental cement can hold it on the tooth for a short time. This should keep the tooth protected while you wait for the appointment.

If the crown gets lost or broken, then there is another way to protect the tooth. Dental cement alone can do a decent enough job of keeping the tooth safe by completely covering it.

For those who may be considering the idea, do not apply household glues to the crown or in your mouth. These glues may be the closest thing at hand, but they are really not good for you. Please do not put them in your mouth.
