Caring for FASTBRACES During Treatment

Oral Hygiene Instructions:

  1. Prepare to brush. Take off elastics and any other removable parts of your orthodontic appliance.
  2. Brush for a minimum of two minutes (brush the tops and bottoms of the brackets and along the gumline to remove plaque).
  3. Floss at least once daily. Floss threaders are used during this process.
  4. Rinse mouth. Use a fluoride rinse before bed to help prevent cavities.
  5. Proxy brushes are a great tool to use to clean around the wire and brackets.
  6. If instructed to wear elastics, place them back in and only remove when eating or brushing. Not wearing elastics as directed will result in longer treatment time.

Foods to Avoid With Braces

  • Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
  • Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice
  • Sticky foods: caramel, gum
  • Hard foods: nuts, hard pretzels
  • Sugary food: candy
  • Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots (cut into smaller pieces first if you want to eat these)

What to Expect with FASTBRACES

  • Moderate soreness the first few days following your appointment (take acetaminophen as needed for discomfort).
  • Teeth may feel mobile or spongy.
  • Insides of mouth may become irritated or rough feeling. If you have any sores/cuts from the brackets, swish with peroxyl and warm salt water. Wax can also be used over brackets for comfort.
